My Friends Fredrik Backman

Reviewer: Anonymous

It's a story looking back at four teenage friends -- characters who only really fit with each other and the different paths their lives took. It's also about the transformative power of art. The audio version is great -- very well read!

Game Changer

by Rachel Reid

Book #1 Game Changers series

(First book of the Heated Rivalry series of HBO max fame).

Read on Libby but available in our library!

Reviewer: Chelsea

This book is adorable, spicy, and a great book to read if you want to read something LGBTQIA+ for Pride month.

I borrowed this book on Libby but it's available in our library in our "New" section.

This book is written like a fairly typical rom-com. You've got your meet cute, you've got some relationship drama, you've got the hockey aspects (if you're into sports romance hockey romances are BIG right now), and you've got the happily ever after.

It is written in 3rd person so I found it a touch harder to really feel connected to the characters in the same way that say, Elle Kennedy's Off-Campus series connects with me, but it was still very enjoyable.

Spice: 4.5/5 (seriously, it picks up early and stays hot throughout the whole book)

Rating: 4.25/5

Genres: Romance, Rom Com, Sports Romance, Hockey, East Coast, Contemporary Romance, LGBTQIA+, MM Romance

Bourbon & Lies

Book #1 of the Bourbon Boys

Author: Victoria Wilder

Available in our Library

Reviewer: Chelsea

If you're in the mood for a spicy summer romance with a hint of danger and a lot of bourbon this book might be for you.

The main characters are realistic, in that they make relatable choices (unfortunately, the reality of being a billionaire is not one I can relate to). There's an adorable dog name Julep. The MMC literally rides in on a horse and is nicknamed "Cowboy" by the FMC. There's some witty banter, some intense scenes, and some adorable family time.

Likes: Characters, story is interesting, dog is adorable, spicy scenes are good.

Dislikes: a bit too crime drama-y for me (though others might like that). Got a bit repetitive in the middle but ended strong.

Spice level: 4/5  - There are definitely some spicy scenes

Rating: 4/5

Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett

Emily Wilde book #1

Read on Libby

Reviewer: Chelsea

This book is whimsical and academic in the best of ways. If you've ever dreamed of going on a research driven quest in the frozen north of Iceland this book is for you.

The main character, Emily Wilde, is a socially awkward yet endearing academic who is determined to uncover the mysteries of the Fae. In this alternate reality Fae exist and the study of them is a legitimate academic pursuit. It takes place around the early 1900s and has a bit of a historical expedition feel.

There is a bit of romance in the book, but it is not the main focus, and the book is written somewhat in academic journal format where ethnography is the primary focus. But it's very enjoyable and had me laughing at several points.

Dislikes: Most of the "twists" are fairly obvious, but it wasn't so much a "what?!" as a "oh that's how they got there" which I don't mind. Also there are points where it's very academic, which depending on your preferences can be either a positive or a negative.

Likes: setting, characters, the dog (no harm comes to the dog!)

Spice level: 1/5

Rating: 4.25/5

Genres: Fantasy, Fae, Cozy, Exploration, Academic

Dead Silence

 by S.A. Barnes

Available in our system

Reviewer: Chelsea

This book was creepy and exactly the vibe I was looking for in a ghost ship story.  Set in the future and featuring a crew of deep space maintenance workers who are about to finish their 20+ month stint, the heroine and her crew hear a distress call on an old communications channel and decide to check it out.

What they find? A luxury space ship that's been missing for decades, and a whole lot of creepy nope.

Likes: The characters (who made reasonable choices for the most part), some twists were predictable but not in a bad way and some predictions ended up being totally wrong.

Dislikes: There's a lot of violence and almost jump scares in this book, so if creepy is not your vibe I'd recommend skipping this one.

Spice: 2/5 There's really not much for spice in this book. Though there is a bit of romance.

Rating: 4.5/5

Genres: Horror, Science Fiction, Mystery, Thriller, Space.

GoodReads Reviews on Books Available in our library

Two Books in One

Two Books in One

Tom - Reader of Books  :

Rarely are Cross and Sampson separated for long, but when circumstances force them onto different paths, the result is one of the most engaging entries in the series. While Sampson grapples with a wave of crime across the city, Cross is driven by something far more personal: the desperate search for his missing son.

This deviation from the usual formula works surprisingly well. Both strands are rich with tension and emotional weight, yet neither sacrifices character for spectacle. The dual narratives allow Cross and Sampson’s personalities to shine independently, reminding readers why their partnership works so effectively when reunited. The supporting cast is also given greater prominence, strengthening the ensemble dynamic and adding welcome depth to the familiar world.

This is classic Patterson territory. It’s accessible, fast-paced, and effortlessly readable. It may not challenge the intellect in profound ways, but that’s hardly the point. It delivers exactly what it promises: gripping entertainment from start to finish.

And as for Cross himself, one can’t help but wish his television counterpart carried quite this much presence and complexity

A Fun Dual POV

Two Books in One

 BWT :

Do you like hockey? Do you like romances featuring a gorgeous, kind, sweet, and lonely millionaire hockey player falling in love with a gorgeous, sweet, smart, and funny "regular" guy? Do you like a lot of insanely hot sex? Do you love stories where one character is in the closet, but could decide to possibly throw his entire career away all for LOVE?

There's a little miscommunication in Game Changer, but it doesn't feel like manufactured angst. It made sense that Kip wouldn't initially push for the two to make a big announcement at the beginning of their relationship, and it made even more sense that he would eventually tire of being kept secret and having to, in a way, be pushed back into the closet.

I really enjoyed Game Changer. I liked the dual POV, and the story sucked me in quickly and completely. I especially loved the secondary characters in this, especially Rosanov who's my favorite character in the series, and thoroughly enjoyed the humor Scott's teammates and Kip's best friends provide in the story. Plus there's a great, sigh-inducing, happy ending.

Still fresh - even after 60+ books

 Miriam Kahn   :

Hold onto your hats, Dallas and Roarke are on the hunt for a murderer and thief.
In this thrilling installment (#62), readers learn a little more about Roarke as a teen as Dallas and Roarke dig into clues left by thief and killer.

It's a brain teaser as you pay attention to the smallest clues. The suspects are numerous and the solution is wonderfully surprising.

This might not be the best book to jump into the series, then again, you'll also want to read all the previous books.

Fans are excited the next book is out in the fall.

What makes a life worth living?

What makes a life worth living?

 Karen   :

Nora Seed is a young woman who is suffering from depression.
Her job at a music store has ended,, her cat died..her personal relationships with family are not the best.. and she tries to end her life.
Well, instead of her life ending.. she ends up in The Midnight Library where she chooses books that take her to different lives, parallel lives she may have lived...in these lives she is many different things.. there is a Nora who became a rock star, another who has won Olympic medals, another living aboard an Arctic research vessel; some versions are mothers, wives... if she finds a good life, she can stay.
I enjoyed this story of learning what is important in life!

Banter replaces spice

What makes a life worth living?

Banter replaces spice

A serene landscape featuring mountains, a lake, and a clear blue sky.

 Ericka   :

I am in shock and awe over how much I loved this book.

I did not want to read this. My book club chose this book and I complained about it because it’s YA, with no spice. I forced myself to read this and from PAGE ONE I absolutely devoured it.

People told me over and over the spice wasn’t needed and that the banter was amazing. I said there’s NO WAY banter replaces spice… and then it did. I did not miss the spice at all. Not once. This book was so action packed and the banter/flirting was so incredible that there was not a single moment I was asking for spice.

Now do I think in another life this book had the opportunity to be a delicious why choose? Yes, yes I do. But in THIS LIFE, the MMCs feelings and his words were enough to absolutely do me in.

I loved the plot. I loved the romance. I loved EVERYTHING about this book.

 Rachael  :

it's a decent book of patterns. i think it can be a bit vague in spots but it can be quite difficult to even do a decent search on ravelry for patterns of this nature as human body parts as tools are not available as choice options. also the search terms for arm or finger typically get you things you wear on your arms or fingers as opposed to things to knit with them. considering the different size of human arms or fingers making gauge might be awkward, and yarn usage estimates also might fluctuate greatly. it would require a lot of guesswork or trial and error to either match the patterns as shown with a different body let alone using yarn subs, so the patterns are definitely guidelines. however i did see new techniques i haven't attempted with arm knitting before, like cabling.
