Stockton Township Public Library History

Welcome to Stockton Township Public Library

A Century of Stories: The History of Stockton Township Public Library

From a small room above a clothing store to the modern community cornerstone, the Stockton Township Public Library has been the heart of our town for over 120 years.

The Early Chapters (1903–1925)

Our story began in 1903 in the W.E. White Building. Located above Hermann’s Clothing Store (the space many of you know today as Copperleaf Cafe), the library was managed by our very first librarian, Rose Clancy.

  • Fun Fact: In those early days, the library’s monthly rent was a grand total of $6.00!

By 1925, the library had outgrown its original home and moved to the second floor of the Stockton Town Hall. It quickly became a local staple; newspaper archives from the era report that nearly 1,500 people visited annually—roughly half the town’s population at the time!

Building for the Future (1966–1971)

As our collection expanded, so did our need for a dedicated space. In 1966, the library purchased the former E.UB. Church property at 140 W Benton St. Five years of planning and construction followed, culminating in the grand opening of our current facility in 1971.

The Library Today: More Than Just Books

While our walls hold plenty of history, we are constantly evolving to meet the needs of a digital age.

  • A Growing Collection: We offer over 18,000 books and media items. Can't find what you're looking for? Our inter-library loan system (PrairieCat and FMI) and apps like Libby and the Palace Project put millions of titles at your fingertips.
  • The 2023 Renovation: We recently reimagined our Children’s Library! It now features a cozy book nook, playful new furniture, modern lighting, and a constantly rotating selection of new titles for our youngest readers.
  • Local Heritage: We are proud to house extensive genealogy collections, year books, and historical photographs, preserving the legacy of Stockton for future generations.
